Clarskville Juneteenth Block Party
The Clarksville Juneteenth Block Party is the inaugural Juneteenth celebration in Clarksville, TN. This first of its kind event featured local business vendors, food trucks, and live music. Event attendees included local politicians, several Miss Black Clarksville winners, NPHC Panhellenic fraternities and sororities, and plenty of Clarksville favorites.
What is Juneteenth?
On June 19, 1865, General Granger and his military force arrived in Galveston, Texas and the forces were strong enough to overcome resistance to the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” in honor of the day that Granger announced the abolition of slavery in Texas. The holiday is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.
Though this holiday was forged from injustice and struggle this block party is not about that. This block party is to celebrate progress, community, and black excellence. It is important to acknowledge the past, but we want to make sure that we are honoring the present and working toward a fruitful future.
The Clarksville Juneteenth Block Party takes place in the heart of downtown Clarksville at the Downtown Commons. This annual event has plans to grow and expand just like the thriving African American community in Clarksville TN. For more information or to get involved visit clarksvillejuneteenth.com
